Why do I need health and safety training?

Everyone understands the need for health and safety at work, what you might not realise is that every year approximately 200 people die whilst they are working, also over 1 million people are injured and over 2 million are affected by an illness either caused or made worse by their work. This is why health and safety training is so vital to businesses, as only with the correct training for your business can you ensure that your staff don’t become part of those statistics.

Health and safety training can help you find out how best to reduce or remove the potential risks in the work place, helping to ensure your staff don’t get injured or made sick by the work they do for you – every manager knows the importance of a happy, and more importantly healthy, workforce. If you get the training you need to help you gain an understanding of the issues you may face, then you can create an environment where safe, healthy working practices come naturally to everyone.

No matter the level of the employee concerned, be it yourself as the company owner, your managers or supervisors or your staff, everyone will benefit from health and safety training. As the owner, you have a legal duty to ensure you are up to date with the most recent information regarding health and safety in your work place and to minimise the risks to those you employ as well as carry out risk assessments and draw up action plans against instances like fire risks, safe computer usage and working at heights.

Your managers and supervisors need training to be sure they understand what is expected of them with regards to health and safety within your business. They need to be able to understand your healthy and safety policy and ensure that all staff adhere it to. They need to be able to act decisively in your absence against specific threats to staff safety.

All employees need to be aware of the health and safety policy, and what to do in the event of a problem, whether that is the correct drill for a break out of fire, what to do in the event of a robbery, or simply who and how to approach someone when they have any concerns about health and safety issues.

There are many ways you can get health and safety training for you and your staff. Many companies offer health and safety advice and training, so be sure to shop around to find the one that best suits your requirements.
